AMG Driver’s Package Retrofit: Unlocking Top Speed for S, E, and C-Class
Anyone driving a Mercedes-AMG wants to access its full performance. However, an electronic wall often stops you at 250 km/h. The factory solution is the AMG Driver’s Package (Code 250), which raises the top speed. But what if this package wasn't configured at the time of purchase?
In this guide, you will learn everything about retrofitting the Vmax increase for the current W223, W214, W206, and CLE53 series.
Overview: Models & Speed Benefits
| Model | Series | Standard Vmax | With Driver’s Package | Price (approx. factory) |
| S63 E Performance | W223 | 250 km/h | 290 km/h | approx. €1,980 |
| S580 V8 | W223 | 250 km/h | 250 km/h (Limit)* | N/A |
| E53 Hybrid | W214 | 250 km/h | 275 km/h | approx. €2,260 |
| C63 e-Performance | W206 | 250 km/h | 280 km/h | approx. €2,260 |
| C43 AMG | W206 | 250 km/h | 265 km/h | approx. €2,260 |
| CLE53 AMG | C236 | 250 km/h | 270 km/h | approx. €2,260 |
*Note: For the S580 (non-AMG), an official increase via the Driver's Package is usually not provided; only external tuning solutions apply here.
Three Ways to Retrofit
There are basically three ways to release the electronic shackles of your AMG:
1. Official Activation via Mercedes-Benz
For many current models, the AMG Driver’s Package can be retrofitted via the Mercedes me Store or a Mercedes partner.
- Advantage: Full preservation of factory warranty, entry in the vehicle's data card.
- Requirement: Often includes a driver training session at the AMG Driving Academy.
2. Software Optimization (ECU Remapping)
Independent tuners offer Vmax removal by intervening in the engine control unit.
- Advantage: More cost-effective than the official option; often combinable with a performance increase.
- Risk: Potential loss of engine warranty and issues with manufacturer software updates.
3. Vmax Modules / Coding Dongles
For some models, OBD solutions exist, such as the VMax removal via Active VMax Deleter.
- Suitability: Especially useful if no permanent software changes are desired. For the new S-Class (W223) or C-Class (W206), these solutions are technically demanding but effective.
Details for Specific Models
S-Class (W223) – S63 & S580
The S63 E Performance requires precise tuning due to the hybrid system. Official retrofitting is recommended. For the S580 V8, Vmax-off is usually only possible through external partners.
E-Class (W214) – E53 Hybrid
The new E53 Hybrid can be officially unlocked to 275 km/h. Check the Mercedes me portal under "Digital Extras."
C-Class (W206) – C43 & C63 e-Performance
The C63 e-Performance gains significantly with 280 km/h. For the C43, the package provides 265 km/h. Check tire speed ratings.
CLE53 AMG
The CLE Coupe reaches 270 km/h. Since the hardware is identical to the E-Class, similar conditions apply.
Important Requirements
- Tire Index: Tires with (Y) index required.
- Braking System: Must be certified for higher speeds.
- Legal Approval: Entry in vehicle documents necessary.
